Each summer, we engage in outdoor activities that are fun (like hiking and camping) and some that are not as fun (like yard work and maintenance). With this increase in outdoor activities comes an increase in issues with various pests. Here are a few tips to help minimize how much pesky pests influence your summertime outdoor activities.
Before we talk fun, let’s talk work. Summers here in northeast Florida are always hot, usually quite wet. Couple these facts with a home next to woods or water and you’ve got the perfect storm to create a superior breeding ground for all manner of annoying pests. Mosquitoes and ticks both love warm, wet areas to propagate. If you are out on your property cutting grass or clearing brush, you’re making yourself readily available for getting munched on by these little blood suckers.
To combat their efforts, make sure to wear clothes that cover as much skin as possible. Liberal use of bug repellent is also recommended, especially around areas that would be easy entry points, like waistbands, wrists and ankles and hatbands. After your work is done and you are cleaning up, be sure to check yourself for any ticks that may have decided to hang around.
If your summer weekends involve food, family and fun, there are some things you can do to help make your recreational time more fun with less swatting at bugs. After the kids get done with the slip n’ slide, air dry it and put it away. This will save the extra stress on your lawn and will also restrict extra opportunities for mosquitoes to breed. If you are more of a swimming pool party person, be sure to properly store all pool toys and noodles when everyone is done splashing around. Bees love bright colored objects that hold moisture that they can return to the hive with.
